about the box league

The UK’s first structured, ranked, season-long competitive functional fitness league. Teams of 6 athletes compete in fixtures (home and away) at their own and rival gyms across an 8-week season, climbing four ranked divisions.

Trial Season 2026 launches across Buckinghamshire and the Home Counties with eight affiliated gyms. Season 1 (April 2027) expands to five clusters nationwide. By 2030 we’re aiming for 15+ clusters, cross-cluster playoffs, and a UK champion.

The Box League was founded independently with the mission of bringing proper league structure to the UK’s functional fitness scene. Programming is sub-contracted to industry experts to ensure impartiality across all divisions.

registering as an athlete

No — but your home gym owner has to authorise you to compete from their venue. Non-members can be charged a higher home fixture bolt-on fee at the gym owner’s discretion.

Trial Season placement is set by The Box League directly from team-combined workout scores which are submitted at registration (cardio, lifts, unbroken skills). From Season 1, division placement is determined by a formal qualifying ranking process held in November.

Cardio (2km row), lifting 1RMs (snatch, clean & jerk, deadlift), and unbroken skills (pull-ups, muscle-ups, etc.). Overstating your ability places your team in a division you can’t compete in. Understating means the season won’t challenge you. Honest stats serve you best.

Captains can use substitutions in declared circumstances (injury, withdrawal). Minimum fixture-day numbers (2M + 2F) still apply. Substitutions used count against season tiebreakers — the rules favour teams that keep their declared roster together.

31 July 2026. Trial Season caps at 192 athletes (16 teams × 6 athletes) across 8 gyms. Season 1 registration closes 30 November 2026.

for gym athletes

affiliating your gym.

Up to 4 teams per gym for the Trial Season.

No — you authorise each athlete. Some gyms welcome non-members for the extra fixture revenue; some keep it members-only. Your call.

Read the full list of equipment needed in Appendix A.

Valid public liability insurance appropriate for hosting competitive fitness events, maintained for the duration of the affiliated season. You confirm this at registration.

You earn the £12 standardised away fixture fee for every visiting athlete — paid directly to the host gym. On top of that, you set a discretionary bolt-on fee for your own home athletes (separate rates for members and non-members) to cover your running costs.

fixtures & format

fixture day info

1.5 hours total, including warm-up and cool-down. Three workouts per fixture, each up to 30 minutes.

Two female and two male athletes from each team compete. One female and one male athlete rest and judge the opposing team. Most teams rotate so every athlete competes in 2 of 3 workouts.

A team can compete with a minimum of 4 athletes (2M + 2F). You must bring at least one supporter to act as judge. If you can’t field 2M + 2F for any workout, the opposing team wins that workout automatically.

Clean sweep (3 wins) = 4 pts. Fixture win (2 wins) = 3 pts. Single workout win = 1 pt. Every fixture distributes exactly 4 points — the table stays mathematically clean.

Within a workout: tie-break time (the time at which the tied score was reached). Across the season (teams level on points): most clean sweeps → most away fixture wins → most away workout wins → fewest substitutions used → most total workout wins.

costs & timings

Each athlete pays £50 administration fee (includes the management of the league, programming, and judging appeals), £12 per away fixture (7 per season), plus any bolt-on charge that your gym owner decides for members and non-members. Full pricing is confirmed upon registration submission.

The captain collects payment from teammates and makes a single payment to The Box League on behalf of the whole team.

Yes — £12 per athlete per away fixture, part of the fee you pay via your captain. Home gym bolt-on fees are set independently by each gym owner – again this is all handled when you register and pay via your captain.

Saturdays at the home team’s gym. Trial Season runs September–October 2026 (4 fixtures per team across 8 weekends). Season 1 runs April–October 2027 (14 fixtures per team across 15 weekends).

Late cancellations by teams or gyms may result in points penalties and, for repeat breaches, removal from the season. Full cancellation and refund policy is in the Athlete and Gym Owner Terms.
